Foundation Community Mapping
Students in Mawson 3 and Mawson 4 have been very busy over the last two weeks designing and building a 3D map of our local Brighton community.
We began by brainstorming the special places within our community that students visit or use regularly. Some of these places included the Brighton jetty, the boardwalk, the Brighton Rugby and Football clubs and ovals, and of course, our school.
With their partners, students drew their special place and created a design of how they would build it using recycled materials. We invited our year 6 buddies to give students feedback on their designs to make important improvements. We then worked with expert, Meggie Presti who is a lecturer at Flinders University, to develop our construction and making skills.
During our Maths lessons next week, students will refer to Google Maps and order their special place buildings in the accurate position and location to finish off our 3D map.
This is the first major piece of work which the M3 and M4 students have developed that will be part of our Learning Expedition celebration of learning at the Brighton Public Library late next term.
