As part of our Year 6 Learning Expedition, Every Community Has a Story, Spence 4 recently partnered with the local volunteer group Adopt a Spot to participate in a Beach Dune Care Project at Brighton Beach.

The excursion provided students with an authentic opportunity to put their learning into action by caring for an environment that is such an important part of our local community. Working alongside dedicated volunteers, students collected rubbish and plastic from the beach and dune system while learning about the impact that litter has on wildlife, biodiversity and the health of our coastline.

Throughout the morning, our students demonstrated outstanding responsibility, teamwork and respect for both the environment and the wider community. It was particularly pleasing to hear the many encouraging comments from members of the public, who praised the students for their enthusiasm, hard work and willingness to contribute positively to their local area.

One of the most powerful learning moments came as students reflected on just how much rubbish was collected in a relatively small section of the beach. It reinforced the importance of community action and highlighted how even small acts of service can make a meaningful difference. Inspired by the experience, Spence 4 hopes to make beach clean-up activities a regular part of their Learning Expedition, continuing to care for the coastline while strengthening their connection to the Brighton community.

This experience builds on the class’s recent revegetation project with the City of Holdfast Bay and forms an important part of the Geography phase of the Learning Expedition. Throughout the year, students have been investigating how Brighton has been shaped by people, place and migration, while discovering that they, too, have the ability to shape its future through active citizenship and community service.

We are incredibly proud of the way our students continue to embrace opportunities to learn beyond the classroom and demonstrate that meaningful learning can also create meaningful change within our community.
