Spence 4’s Year 6 students recently enjoyed an exciting and educational excursion to Adelaide Zoo. Students represented Brighton Primary School exceptionally well throughout the day, demonstrating respectful behaviour, listening carefully and showing plenty of curiosity as they explored the zoo.

A highlight of the excursion was an engaging education session focused on zoo habitat design. Students investigated how zoos create habitats that meet the physical and behavioural needs of different animals. They also considered how habitat designers balance animal welfare with important factors such as visitor engagement, keeper access and safety.

Throughout the day, students observed a variety of animal habitats and collected ideas that will support their upcoming integrated Science, Mathematics and Technologies Zoo Design Project. This project will challenge students to apply their understanding of animal adaptations, measurement, area, scale and design principles as they develop their own zoo habitat proposals.

The excursion provided a valuable opportunity for students to connect their classroom learning with a real-world setting. We are looking forward to seeing how they use their observations and new knowledge to create thoughtful, practical and engaging habitat designs.
