Year 1 Phonics Check

Each year during Term 3, all Year 1 students in Department for Education schools take part in a quick and simple screening check to see how they are progressing in phonics; an important skill that supports children as they learn to read.

Our Year 1 teachers have recently completed this screening with all students. The information gathered provides valuable insight into each child’s developing phonics skills and, alongside other assessment information, helps teachers plan targeted learning and provide the right support for each child as they continue their reading journey.

We are proud to have a dedicated Reading Intervention Teacher at Brighton. This role enables us to provide additional, intensive support to students who may benefit from targeted small group reading instruction. Identifying and responding to students’ needs early is an important part of helping every child develop the skills, confidence and enjoyment needed to become a successful reader.

If you have any questions or would like to talk about your child’s reading development, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their classroom teacher.
